Fränkisch, 2. Hälfte 6. Jh. n. Chr. H 10,8cm. Aus bräunlichem Klarglas. Der Rand leicht nach außen gebogen, der Randabschluss heiß verrundet und verdickt. Konkave Wandung mit vertikalen Rippen, Umbruch am Boden. Boden konvex. Auf der Unterseite Spuren der Heftnarbe und Sammlerinschrift.

Provenienz: Ex Sammlung D., Wien, erworben im Wiener Kunsthandel (Dorotheum) in den 1970er/1980er Jahren.

Das Trinken aus Gefäßen, die man erst nach dem Ausleeren umgekehrt auf den Rand absetzen konnte, war unter den Franken eine weit verbreitete Sitte. Das Glas wurde in einem Zug geleert und dann erst abgestellt bzw. gestürzt. Wie oft nachgeschenkt wurde, ist nicht bekannt. Vgl. dazu Sammlung Ernesto Wolf a.O. S. 336.

Während die griechische Schale ganz allgemein beim Weinverzehr verwendet wurde, war der Kantharos als Attribut des Dionysos eng mit seinem Kult bzw. seiner Verehrung verbunden. Zwei seltene Vasen der griechischen Ceramica argentata.
a) Becher mit abgesetztem Rand achämenidischer Art. Spätes 4. - 3. Jh. v. Chr. ø 12,1cm. Grauer Ton. b) Flacher Teller mit konvex gewölbtem Rand und kleinem profilierten Knauf. 2. - 1. Jh. v. Chr. Beiger Ton mit grauem Überzug. ø 17,2cm. Die graue Färbung diente entweder selber als Silberimitat oder als Grundierung für eine Zinnauflage. Auf beiden Gefäßen interessante Graffiti, beim Becher außen auf dem Rand mit großen Buchstaben, beim Teller kleinformatige Zeichen (vielleicht lykische Schrift) an mehreren Stellen. 2 Stück!

Two rare vases of the Ceramica argentata. a) Bowl with offset rim of Archaemenid type. Late 4th - 3rd century BC. ø 12.1cm. Gray terracotta. b) Flat plate with convex, rounded rim and small, profiled knob. 2nd - 1st century BC. Beige terracotta with gray coating. ø 17.2cm. The gray color served either as an imitation silver or as a primer for coating with tin. Both vessels bear interesting graffiti: the beaker has large letters on the outside of the rim, while the plate has small-format symbols (perhaps Lycian script) in several places. 2 pieces! Both with minor bumps, otherwise intact.
