Struck during Pyrrhos expedition in Italy and Sicily, the coins of this series depict the helmeted portrait of the citys founder Leukippos, along with two barley ears as the civic emblem. It seems to be interesting that usually Demeter, the goddess of corn, appears on the obverse of the coins. However, this choice may well refer to the citys foundation myths and to the significant economic reliance on its major export.
